My grandma has the early stages of dementia, Parkinson's disease, and the long-term effects of her stroke. She has lost her independence and the ability to do the things she loves, particularly being outside and in the garden. Over the past two years, I have taken photos of veggie patches, community gardens, fruits, vegetables, and animals. I started researching colour and attention in dementia patients and found that black-and-white imagery tends to help with focus. To get me started I took inspiration from the Children’s book Cicci Cocco, in terms of layout, size and overall feel. However I now know this is not the direction I would like to explore. I’m still in the process of experimenting with size, layout, form and texture. I most likely won’t go down the path of a book, I think some type of card series would be a better approach and easier for her to pick up and look at.
